Baby Ko's Surprise birthday dinner...kind of lol

Kiko's older brother and I spent a whole week texting back and forth, sharing ideas about what we should do for Kiko's birthday. We thought of surprising him with a really good birthday dinner with all his favorite food... SHRIMP, chocolate cake and avocados! I told Kiko we were just gonna have the usual bbq at his brother's house so he didn't know we were planning for something exciting!

I'm just gonna go right ahead and talk about the food. Those yucky looking things were the veins or poop from the shirmp. Kiko's sister was de-veining the shirmp getting it clean and ready for the special Ceviche his other sister was going to make.

I don't know the exact name of this dish so lets just call it Spicy Shrimp Ceviche. Raw shrimp marinated in lot of lime juice (to cook it) with sliced red onions, cucumbers and minced serrano or thai chiles..ugh I forgot which one..sorry! It was really spicy lol....really good, but really spicy!

A milder version with less chiles. It was still spicy to me lol. I'm a sissy! It was best eaten it with the tortilla chips.

I made my Lumpia or Filipino Eggrolls. I prepped them the night before and cooked it at his brother's place the next day. I used a Filipino lumpia wrapper and stuffed it with ground chicken and shrimp with minced celery, carrots and onions. It was their first time having it and they loved it!

Nom, nom, nom...They were good dipped in a Thai Sweet and Chili sauce. I bought it from the grocery store.

yikes...look at my face. My face makeup is lighter than my neck ugh! lol

Kiko's brother made his delicious Shrimp fried rice. For a Mexican guy, he sure can cook good fried rice...I'm kidding. It has all kinds of stuff in it like bell peppers, onions, green beans, eggs and of course shirmp.

Kiko loves Avocado and when I say love...I mean really love Avocados! So, Kiko's other sister made a huge batch guacamole from scratch! It was good with tortilla chips or by the spoonful hehe...

Tostito chips to scoop up the Shrimp Ceviche or Guacamole ^_^

Kiko loves chocolate so his other sister...gosh he has a lot of sisters...she got him a chocolate cake  from King's Hawaiian Bakery and Restaurant. It was so good... light, moist and not too sweet and its chocolate!!!

My pretty plate! I have a thing for taking a picture of my plate full of all kinds of food. You will see it a lot in my posts lol. It's sooo pretty!!!

It was a successful birthday dinner and Kiko was overwhelmed with all the food and love. He really thought it was going to be some regular bbq. Thanks to all his family members that made this day possible!

Baby Kos' Birthday @ Sushi Delight!

Kiko had his birthday last month, and I asked him what he wanted and he said, "No Disney Land!" LMAO! It's actually a funny story. Last year, I took him to Disney Land for his birthday. He's never been there and come on, it's the happiest place on earth so for sure he would love it, right? The whole time he acted like he was having fun but at the end of the day, he told me he hated it...well some of it. He didn't like the long lines and some people had no sense of space and kept bumping into us. However, he did like seeing the different characters, watching the shows and seeing my face glow in the Tiki room lol. I'm sorry Kiko, but I couldn't help but laugh whenever I think about it. We've been together for so long and you would think I know these things already and try to avoid it as much as possible on his special day, but nooo... I'm such a terrible girlfriend. But Kiko was still sweet and patient and didn't show any sign of annoyance and frustration ^_^

This year, I planned a birthday surprise with the help of his older brother (it will be in my next post). I told Kiko we were just gonna have the usual bbq at his brother's house for his birthday, but he didn't know we're gonna have lots of balloons, chocolate cake and all kinds of shrimp dishes because he loves shrimp.

I took him to a really good sushi place called Sushi Delight located in Lomita, Ca for his pre-birthday celebration. It was recommended by an old co-worker, and he swore it was the best sushi place ever, so hey, why not! Well, I'm glad I took his recommendation because we had the best sushi we've had in a long time. Everything we had was amazing!

From the outside, the place looked like a dark liquor store. But when we went in, the place was actually pretty nice. It was small and cozy. They had a sushi bar, 3 booths and several tables in the middle. The place probably seated less than 50 people. They had dim lighting, which I liked a lot. It gave a very relaxing ambiance.

I love menu with photos. It really helped me decide on what to order since I knew what the food looked like. They had a great selection of the usual sushi, sashimi and specialty sushi rolls. They also had bento boxes and sushi combos. The prices were reasonable. It ranged from $8.99-$12.99 for the rolls and the sushi combos was less than $17.99.

The service was awesome. All their staff was very friendly, especially the girls. They were always smiling. Our server was a dude and he was on top of things. He let us took our time to look at the menu and decide. Also, we never ran out of water in our glasses ^_^

Sushi Delight was wonderful. I think it's our new sushi joint from now on. Everything we ordered was excellent. The sushi was fresh, and the portion was huge. It was definitely bigger than what we are used to.

They offer a sushi roll eating challenge. Maybe next time? naaahhh lol.

We got complimentary miso soup and house salad. Miso soup was hot and warmed our bellies as we waited for our food. The house salad was sweet and tangy from the mayo based dressing. Kiko said it was too sweet for his liking but I liked it a lot!

First order was a combo of Eel Avocado roll with 7 pieces of sushi $17.99 ( i think!) This was a bad picture of the plate but I'm telling you the portion was huge. Eel and Avocado roll is one of my favorites and it never disappoint. It's a California roll topped with creamy Avocado and Eel covered in a gloppy sugary brown sauce...Yum!

Tempura California Roll $8.99. It was deep fried California roll in a tempura batter drizzled in their special sauce. Kiko and I never had hot sushi roll before so this was something new. We enjoyed it very much. It was rich and a bit heavy in the tummy and really filling. Again, the portion was huge...a bit shocking but hey were not complaining.

Wasabi and Pickled Ginger

Tiger roll $9.99. Shrimp, crab and cucumber roll topped with shrimp, avocado and unagi sauce on top.We were already full and we pretty much forced our selves to eat this lol. Again, the portion was huuuge!

Overall, it was a fun and belly filling experience. We were pleased with the service, and the food was excellent. We really couldn't think of anything bad to say about it. In fact, I recommend this place to anyone who's in the look out for a really good and affordable sushi joint. We will definitely go back again. Thank you Sushi Delight for making Kiko's birthday so awesome!

It was okay....

The only reason why I went to my mom's work Holiday party was because the food. Last year's party was freakin' awesome. There was an insane buffet of food with all kinds of unique and interesting dishes and all kinds of desserts and pastries that seemed never ending. It was an unforgettable night and I clearly remembered how I forcefully stuffed my face with bread pudding after bread pudding after bread pudding ^_^ So when my mom asked me to go with her again, I excitedly said YES!

I wish I can show you photos of all kinds of food but this year turned out to be wack! It was a huge downgrade from last year's party. There was no buffet of anything. The food was served on the table and you don't get a choice. You get what they serve you..booo! On the other hand, the service was amazing. Our servers were really nice and you never ran out of water in your glass^_^

The venue was nicely decorated as you can see. It was so pretty!

Goat Cheese salad with strawberry vinaigrette to start was already served on the tables. It was ok...It had candied walnuts that I really liked.

Pretzel Rolls with butter were so good. I ate 3 of these. It tasted like a regular soft pretzel but in a bread roll form. Cool huh?

For the main course, they had grilled steak, fish with some type of onion and garlic sauce with baked potatoes and julienned veggies. This plate was just okay. It was good but definitely not impressive. Like what I said, it was a downgrade from last! The steak was medium well and it was very soft and tender but under seasoned. I had to sprinkle a lot of salt and pepper to taste. The fish was perfectly cooked. I forgot what kind of fish it was...sorry!

For dessert, we had Pecan Tart in a cherry and rum sauce. I haven't had pecan tarts in forever so I enjoyed this one very much. I loved the candied cherries and those green raisins were soaked in alcohol. I got a strong burst bitterness when I ate them.

I expected a lot this year so I was very much disappointed with the food. Don't get me wrong, it was good but like what I said, it was a big downgrade from last year...geesh, I said it like 3 times. I don't expect it to get better next year.

Leftovers are the BEST!

Leftovers are the best! Read about my delicious potluck I had at work here. We had so much food, it was impossible to finish everything in one day so we saved the leftovers to eat the next day ^_^ Everything was still delicious and even better I should say lol!

We still had plenty of food to share ^_^

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Holiday Potluck @ Work

I think I've stressed it enough in this blog how much I love potlucks! What's not to love? People gather together for whatever reason and each person contributes a dish to share with everyone. You get to stuff your face with all kinds food and not feel guilty about it because everyone is doing the same haha! It's freakin' awesome! We had our Holiday potluck at work and it was a big success! I work with the most amazing and nicest ladies in the planet and, they can cook better yo mama ^_^ I'm dead serious. All the food was delicious. We mostly had soul food and of course I made my famous fatty and Spinach dip!!!

Cucumber and Pepperoni Salad sprinkled in black pepper and chopped parsley was one of the appetizers. I had no idea cucumbers and pepperoni tasted good together but it did.

I had to make my Spinach Dip and everyone devoured it. Some ate it with tortilla chips, some ate it by the spoonful lol. Get my recipe here.

Rice with Vegetables for the side dish. It's made with Uncle Ben's ready rice mixed with frozen vegetables to jazz it up ^_^

Green Beans for the side dish too. That's what they called it..just green beans. I forgot to ask how they made but it's cooked with ham and potatoes. It was really delicious.

Van de Kamps' plain bread rolls. It was great for soaking up the juices on my plate.

I'm calling this the OMG Cranberry and Broccoli salad. I'm not saying this just to say it but this salad is the best salad I've ever eaten in my life. It was so bomb! Besides broccoli and cranberry, it had raisins, sun flower seeds and other nuts...

And the dressing was unforgettable. I knew it was a mayonnaise and vinegar based dressing but I didn't know what else was in it. It was sweet and tangy at the same time and it's nothing I've never really tasted before. It was really different in a good way. I'll get the recipe when I come back.

Homemade Spicy Hot links cooked in bbq sauce was one of the meats we had. Sorry you can't see the hot links but trust me they're in there. They were really hot and peppery and, I liked it.

Homemade Fried Chicken. One of my co-workers had to go home to pick them up so they were fresh. Man, I seriously don't know how they make these fried chicken so perfect. It wasn't too greasy, the meat was very soft and the outside was crunchy. They were telling me how to make it but you know it's not going to be the same when I make it lol.

Homemade Baked Beans. The only time I get to eat baked beans is when I get them in a can in my mom's pantry so when I get to eat the real thing, I make sure I eat a lot of it. It was the perfect dipping sauce for my fried chicken. It was so sweet with a hint of saltiness from the bacon bits.

Homemade Baked Mac and Cheese. I'm used to those easy mac that I make at home so to be able to eat a real one was a pleasure lol. Besides a few kinds of cheeses, it also had eggs which made it a little greasy. But it was still good.

I pretty much hit all the food groups in my plate except for fruits lol. I had my meat, cheese, grains, vegetables and stuff. And it looks so a rainbow!

This was my co worker's plate. She just laughed when I snapped a picture.
