The Melting Pot Fondue restaurant

(late post: Feb 17, 2011)

Lesson learned from last year's Valentine's day: No more Boiling crab! I took Kiko to the Boiling Crab in Alhambra last year. It's an awesome place to get your seafood fixed, but I totally forgot how the place is so tiny, the parking sucks huevos, it's always crowded, and the wait is foreeeeever!!! I remember waiting 2 and a half hours just to get a dang table, and by the time we sat down and got our food, we were already annoyed at each other haha...good times!

So this year, I made sure not to make him suffer lol. I took him to The Melting Pot Fondue restaurant (or more like I asked him to take me haha). I was convinced by an old co-worker to come here. He loves this place and eats here at least once a month with his family. He said, it's really expensive, but it's the perfect date night restaurant for couples because the ambiance is romantic, you get a lot of privacy and it's a freakin' fondue restaurant, come on! I also read a bunch of reviews on yelp which really helped a lot.

I made a video of our Melting Pot experience, so watch it after you read this post. But as far as food goes, we had the Big Night out, which is a 4 course dinner. Our lovely server was really nice, and did a great job in explaining everything. I also liked how she made the fondue right in front of us. It was really cool.

Big Night Out

1st COURSE:
Spinach and Artichoke Cheese fondue with chopped granny smith apples, tortilla chips, cubed bread, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower for dippers. I didn't think apples would go with cheese, but it did and it was good.

The cheese gets hotter as you get to the bottom of the pot, so be careful!

2nd COURSE:
Salad
Kiko got the Spinach Mushroom Salad. Fresh spinach, baby Portobello mushrooms,
red onion, chopped bacon and Roma tomatoes
with Burgundy Shallot Vinaigrette. The Vinaigrette was sweet and tangy, so yummy!

I got the California Salad. Mixed-baby-salad greens, Roma tomatoes,
walnuts and Gorgonzola cheese with Raspberry
Black Walnut Vinaigrette. Yum! Love the generous amount of Gorgonzola.

3rd COURSE
Fondue Fusion

Cold-Water Lobster Tail, Filet Mignon, Peppercorn-Crusted NY Strip, Chicken Provençal, Roasted-Garlic
Shrimp, Maple Leaf Farms Duck al’Orange, Ratatouille & Goat Cheese
Ravioli and Fresh Vegetables to be cooked in Mojo broth (It's a type of cooking style. Caribbean-seasoned bouillon with adistinctive fresh-garlic flavor and a citrus flair)
(source: Meltingpot.com)

Now, I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't to impressed with the meat fondue. The spices and flavors were really good, but the meat portion was really tiny. You get 4 pieces of each meat. But I guess it's okay since I was already feeling full from the cheese fondue.

I was in dipping sauce heaven with all the dipping sauces they served us..yum!

Cooking time is about one and a half to two minutes.

4th COURSE:
Cookies and Cream Marshmallow dream fondue with fruits, cheesecake, marshmallows, brownies for dippers!
Kiko and I were chocolate heaven!

It was a really great experience. Kiko and I see ourselves coming back here, but we may have to wait for another special occasion because it's really expensive. Kiko ended up paying $130 for the whole thing...yikes! If you want to try this place, I suggest to go during their happy hour because the Cheese and Chocolate fondue is only $10 each.

My husband and I have been to the Melting Pot once and sadly it's not our cup of tea, yes it is pricey but the food and service was nothing to write home about and we didn't feel it was worth over $100. The only thing I remember enjoying there was the dessert, dipping sweets into melting chocolate is always a pleasure!

@SugarBear: Yes it's really expensive. That's why next time, we will just go to their Happy Hour for the $10 cheese or chocolate fondue.
